Mel and The Monument

by Bryn Whittaker
A well played final was enjoyed by everyone who attended Victoria Park on sunday 14th September. One man was particularly excited to witness cricket at Victoria Park again. 94 years old Mel Petley-Jones won the cup with the 'Incogs' in 1929 (See cricket in Edmonton). The team included his father and 5 brothers. He remembers when Colonel Weaver's monument was erected in 1931 and indeed played with Colonel Weaver. Mel may be the oldest living Edmonton city player to have been on a team to win the trophy; he was delighted to hand the trophy to Amit Anand of Gujarat. He was pleased to know that the washroom was no longer in the bushes! He left saying how thankful he was to have played such a wonderful game and how great it is to see it being played so well in our city. He thanks everyone for making him feel so welcome.
